Château Calon Ségur

Classification: Third Growth (3ème Cru)

Chateau Calon Segur Wine BottleChâteau Calon Ségur takes its name from a little river skiff (Calon) used in the Middle Ages to ferry timber across the Gironde Estuary. It's the northernmost classified growth in the Médoc and was one of the original 3 vineyards in Saint Estephe. The château is one of the oldest and most highly regarded in the Médoc. It was formerly known as Château Calon and Ségur was added when Alexandre, Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Châteaux Latour and Lafite acquired the estate. Calon Ségur held a special place in his heart – he said his “heart was with Calon” which is why the label today includes the drawing of a heart around the Château's name. Château Calon Ségur had been owned by the Gasqueton family since 1894 but was sold to Suravenir Insurance, a subsidiary of banking group Arkéa, in 2012.

The vineyards of Château Calon Ségur cover 123 acres and are partly enclosed by a wall. They lie on 5 metre deep gravel beds mixed with sand and, in parts, limestone and clay.

The grapes grown are 65% Cabernet Sauvigon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.

Wine Style

Château Calon Ségur produces meaty and concentrated wines displaying excellent depth of fruit and superb length. The wines have notes of herbs, plums, black cherries, and currants,, They are wonderfully balanced medium bodied and complex with huge depth. They age well and continue to develop with great finesse in the cellar.
